Your dog has a toy basket. Your dog has a bed, a backup bed, and the spot on your bed they actually use. Your dog has, by any reasonable measure, everything.
And yet here you are, at the holidays, wanting to buy them something. Same. Here’s how we think about gifts for the dog who already has it all, by category, so you can pick a lane and stop scrolling at 1 a.m. (Kidding. Keep scrolling. We’re a scrolling website.)
1. Something to “hunt”
Plenty of dogs aren’t bored because they lack toys. They’re bored because their toys just lie there. Hide-and-seek plush puzzles, snuffle-style toys and stuff-the-treat toys give your dog a job, and a dog with a job is a dog not eating your slippers.
Good for: the dog who “kills” a new toy in four minutes, then stares at you.
2. Something to lick (slowly, please)
Freezable, fillable treat toys turn a spoonful of something tasty into a long, quiet activity. That’s not a gift for your dog. That’s a gift for you, wearing a dog-gift costume.
Good for: holiday dinners, houseguests, and the doorbell.
3. Something that solves a gross problem
The best “useful” gifts fix the daily mess: muddy paws, salty winter sidewalks, the slobber trail. Give a paw cleaner or paw protection and you’ll be thinking about it every single wet walk.
Good for: the dog parent with light-colored floors and a dark sense of humor.
4. Something ridiculous for the photo
Every holiday needs at least one gift that exists purely for the picture: goggles, booties, a birthday-style cake mix, a plush lobster. Will your dog care? Maybe not. Will the photo end up on the fridge? Yes.
Good for: your camera roll. Their dignity is not our department.
5. Something for the dog parent
Sometimes the dog who has everything has a human who needs things too: a pet camera to check in from work, something cozy for a new puppy’s first nights, or dog-themed stuff for the person whose whole personality is now “dog.”
Good for: the friend who talks about their dog more than their job. (Everyone. It’s everyone.)
A few budget rules we actually follow
- Set a number first. Then browse the Under $25 picks.
- Size matters. Pick toys sized for your dog, and supervise with anything plush or chewable. No toy is indestructible.
- Check the current price before you buy. Prices change constantly, which is why we don’t list them.
